About Osmosis (OSMO)

What Is Osmosis (OSMO)?

OSMO is the native token of Osmosis, an automated market maker (AMM) protocol built using Cosmos SDK to enable the development and launch of custom AMMs via Osmosis’ on-chain governance. Additionally, Osmosis runs its own cross-chain AMM DEX.

Osmosis implements Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC), a protocol designed to facilitate interoperability between different blockchains. Similar to other blockchains built using Cosmos SDK, Osmosis is a proof-of-stake (PoS) network. A distinct feature of its PoS model is its superfluid staking mechanism, whereby crypto used in liquidity pools on the Osmosis platform may be further re-used for staking to increase the security of the consensus layer.

Osmosis (OSMO) price

The OSMO token was launched in late June 2021, initially trading at slightly under $5. The token experienced a less-than-ideal start, dropping to $1.38 about three weeks after its launch. However, following its false start and until March 2022, OSMO was all about growth. During a period between late July 2021 and early March 2022, the token was largely in an uptrend.

During that time, OSMO did experience downward corrections along the way, but it invariably rebounded after each correction. OSMO’s price reached three distinct local peaks during this 8-month period: $7.38 on September 20, 2021; $10.71 on January 17, 2022; and an all-time high (ATH) of $11.25 on March 4, 2022.

After March 2022, OSMO’s performance took a U-turn, its price declining to just $0.75 by June 2022. Since then, OSMO has largely been stable, dancing around the $1 mark.

What Is Osmosis (OSMO) Used For?

The OSMO token’s main uses are for governance and for staking to secure the Osmosis network. As a token holder, you can participate in the chain’s governance to vote on proposals if you’ve staked your OSMO funds. Besides voting on protocol upgrades, OSMO stakers can also allocate liquidity mining rewards for liquidity pools and set the base network swap fee.

Osmosis (OSMO) Tokenomics

OSMO is a supply-capped token, with a max supply of 1 billion and a total supply of 325 million. At launch, 100 million OSMO tokens were split equally between fairdrop recipients who are holders of ATOM, the Cosmos native crypto, and a strategic reserve.

The remaining 900 million tokens are distributed as follows:

  • 25% for Staking rewards

  • 25% for Developer vesting

  • 45% for Liquidity mining incentives

  • 5% for Community pool

Who Is the Founder of Osmosis?

The Osmosis blockchain was developed by Osmosis Labs, a Singapore-based blockchain development company. The company’s founders are Sunny Aggarwal and Josh Lee.
